CRIME: Unlawful dumping

POLICE FILE: 2013 information
BROADCAST DATE:

Medicine Hat Crime Stoppers and the Medicine Hat Police Service want to remind residents not to dump unlawfully at donations bins in Medicine Hat. Every month charities have to pay out of their own proceeds to haul wrongfully left items at various donation sites. This cost adds up very quickly and money is then not available for what is really needed for the community. If the item is too big for the bin, it is not to be left on the ground. Unlawful dumping is illegal and can have a fine of up to $10,000.00. A best practice would be to contact the Charity and see if they are able to take the large item or the items not fitting in the bins. If not then it would be up to the owner to discard of properly to avoid a fine and having the charities assuming the cost of getting rid of the items.

CRIME: Fraud Awareness

POLICE FILE: MHPS
BROADCAST DATE: September 24-28th, 2012

Medicine Hat Crime Stoppers would like remind citizens that fraudulent behavior is very prevalent and is a significantly under-reported crime. Fraud can be committed through many media, including door to door, mail, debit and credit card, phone and the internet. Scam artists often resort to pressure tactics and pray on those that are easily caught off guard, target the elderly and living alone and those with savings or accumulated assets like home equity and pension incomes. Phone scammers are skilled liars and are experts in making themselves believable because they want your money. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Say, "No Thanks", and hang up. Con-artists are good at sounding as if they represent legal charities or legitimate businesses. If someone is asking personal questions about banking or asking you to withdraw money, do your homework and contact your personal branch to verify.

BROADCAST DATE: August 27th-31st, 2012

Medicine Hat Crime Stoppers would like to remind all residents to remove all valuables from their vehicles, and close and lock the windows and doors. Some make it far too easy for a thief to gain access to their vehicle and are targeted for leaving valuable items in plain sight. A majority of reported thefts to police are from unlocked vehicles, which can put residents at risk of further victimization for identity theft when wallets and purses are stolen. Do not become complacent; stay aware of your surroundings, be on the lookout for suspicious activity. It is always a good idea to call police if you see something suspicious in your neighborhood, and dont give a thief a quick and quiet way to enter your vehicle.

Sexual predators surf chat rooms and social networking sites actively engaging young people and convincing them to divulge information or worse yet send photos of themselves. This process does not happen overnight and can take months even years to occur. It's imperative for parents to follow basic safety tips which include: placing the computer in a common area of the home, encourage your child not to post or provide private information to a person they have not physically met, and never agree to meet with someone by themselves.

You've seen them on TV, advertised in the newspaper, sent to your email, and delivered with your mail. They are job offers promising you little investment and high cash rewards. All that they ask is for your personal information, usually in the form of a resume, once processed you are sent a cheque to cash, you are offered a portion to keep as payment, and then wire-transfer the remainder. What you don't realize is that the cheque is fake and you've now withdrawn and sent away your own money to a company that does not exist. To protect yourself, these are some steps that you should take:

Avoid sending personal information over the internet until you've been able to verify the company or person as being legitimate

If receiving a cheque wait until funds are confirmed by your bank before withdrawing

Be cautious of ads or job offers claiming high rewards and low risk. If that were true everyone would be doing it.
